Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1814-16; rehabilitated 1961; addition 1988. A French merchant and consul built this 3-story, hipped-roof dwelling on lands obtained from the estate of Christopher Gadsden in 1807. The house retains its simple Neoclassical detailing with the exception of the Greek Revival doorway in the piazza screen. Most of its simple woodwork survives in its interior. The expansive corner lot provides a notable walled garden. Visible from the Alexander Street elevation is a contemporary classical addition. Files contain original Deed of Conservation Easement (Residential Interior & Facade); original Extinguishment of Covenants; documents pertaining to the covenant including Title to Real Estate, which states the restrictive covenant (1961); documents relating to the sale of the property; Part I Certification (Historic Preservation Certification Application); annual inspection reports; Requests for Alternations and associated documents; correspondence relating to management; archaeology report from Charleston Museum; house history; historical/title research; photo of property (photocopy); miscellaneous newspaper articles; documentation of HCF's purchase of the property and expenditures on improvements; chain-of-title and report on the property including history of the Walled City, Gadsden's Green, architectural history, property timeline, maps (Brittany Lavelle, HCF Summer Intern, 2011); biographical information on Simon Jude Chancognie (Brittany Lavelle, 2011); images of two wallpaper samples removed from the house. No easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). See Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.

Notes: Email that accompanied 2 jpgs of wallpaper fragments: On Mon, Apr 27, 2015 at 9:36 AM, Juliana Falk <juliana.falk@poochstyle.com> wrote: Hi April, Thank you so much for helping with the wallpaper search! Attached are the two pieces that are believed to have been in the house - the wallpaper with the cobalt blue background (the first attachment) is part of the paper that Susan matched to the stairway and the paper with the swags may have come from the parlor. I will keep fingers crossed that Minh will have some thoughts about where these papers might be located. I truly appreciate your help with this rather strange situation - if you have any questions, please just let me know. Scans were provided via email by the O'Hear's daughter via email to current homeowner, Juliana Falk. See email correspondence on Media tab.
