Constructed 1859-60. Brownstone pediment supported by carved console brackets marks the front doorway of this 2-and-a-half-story house built by a wholesale grocer and commission merchant a few years before the Civil War. Built on a corner lot, the house is ornamented on the front with brick corbeling and brownstone lintels and sills. A double-tiered piazza with Ionic columns on the first floor and Corinthian columns on the second shades the Wentworth Street side of the house and overlooks a garden space enclosed by a 19th century wall with brick piers, paneled brick coping, and a wooden balustrade.
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence; Part I certification (National Register);easement appraisal report and IRS form 8283; documentation related to HCF's purchase of the property; documentation related to the sale of the property, including initial sale by HCF to Stewart/Marks for restoration; FOHG house history (2008); report by Carl Lounsbury (2005) entitled "13 Pitt Street: An Architectural Description"; Rosen and Associates structural inspection report (2005); house histories from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston and The Buildings of Charleston; floor plans (reduced photocopy of PITT.013.006); proposed architectural for restoration presented to BAR (Marks, 2006) (approval status not indicated); short description of renovation project "HCF's Revolving Fund and the Henry Gerdts House, c. 1859"; copy of sales brochure describing house history and information about the restoration.
The files may also eventually contain annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence and other documentation related to the management of the property, etc.
