Scope and Content

This building is part of the row of structures erected by Col. Othniel Beale in the mid-18th century, whose residence was located in the pink double house at 101 East Bay. The facade of this house features a distinctive curvilinear gable and shares the pilaster treatment with its northern neighbor. The entrance with a fanlight is set into an arched opening outlined in rope molding. It shares the egg and dart mold and pilaster treatment with its northern neighbors. It appears to have survived the fire of 1778 unscathed so its construction date is sometime after the earlier fire of 1740. One of its owners was Charles Cotewsorth Pinckney. This structure was part of the Rainbow Row, East Bay renovation in the 1930s, and it was probably at that time that the storefront was replaced by two windows. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); approval for alterations (2004), including plat; FOHG house history (1998); newspaper article (DYKYC); handwritten (staff) research, chain-of-title notes(scant); 2004 Assessment of Surviving Historic Fabric; miscellaneous documents, ca. 1938-39, including building specifications (drawings), an estimate, and a proposal for work to be done on the house (these documents were donated by the easement donor) (originals in protective sleeves/refer to photocopies). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager).
