My dear Mama
Your letter/ reached me yesterday and/ I was very sorry to hear you/ say that you are feeling/ weak and miserable - Papa/ says his delight in drinking/ the water has not abated/ and that he makes good/ use of his complimentary (?)/ ?? - Have you met with/ your kind friends Mr. and Mrs. [Betrund/betrand???] The learned doctor took a fancy/ to pay a few visits yesterday/ He went to see Dr. King then / to the hotel to see the "Print of/ the Parish" and finally to see/ Madams Lowndes and Pringle/ whom he always admires - Whilst there a carriage drove/ up and to every body's surprise/ Uncle Charles walked in - He/ seemed excited and agitated/ and said he had come over/ to consult Mr. Swinton about/ the necessary steps to be taken/ with regard to Em and her/ property - that Scott was a/ confirmed drunkard and that/ Em could live with him no/ longer. That he was becom-/ing violent and that Em/ had now returned to Georgia/ to make certain final ar/rangements - He said that he/ had given Scott the farm/and paid all his debts/ in New York etc. What a/ melancholy fate for both - / I'on has come up but so/ far I have only received/ a few from him. Captain/ William Elliot has joined his/ family at the Miss Elliotts./ His brother the Revd. John/ Elliot has given up his re/[?] coming but his sis/ter who lives with him in Washington is here and I have/ had some little talk with/ her about persons in Wash/ington - I have invited [Cle?]/ to pay me a visit and he/ says he will come for a/ fortnight in August - /The boys have formed a/ base ball club and have elected/ Aiken their Captain./They meet three times a week at/ the hotel - Ion generally goes/ behind Aiken and he meets/ with July Pringle Ion Lowndes/ and one or two other little fellows/ and they amuse themselves/ in their own way while the/ big boys play./ Aiken is going to Pinnacle tomorrow to/ be gone two days - I don't/ much like the idea of his/ sleeping on the ground/ but he seems to think it/ will be grand!/ I thought Ed too young for the expedi/tion - Love to Paper - Love to Papa - Children and Claude send love -Collection
