Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1760. Extensive changes make it difficult to ascertain the exact date of construction of this wood house on a raised stucco foundation; however, it is considered to be one of the earliest surviving structures within the original Ansonborough suburb. Certain details, such as the heavy heart-pine framing sheathed in beaded black cypress weatherboarding and the low pitched hip roof, indicate an 18th century date. Construction of the building began before or after the lot (part of lot no. 5 of the original George Anson tract) was sold by Daniel Crawford to the Christ Church planter Daniel Legare in 1760. The Legare family sold the house in 1806 to the Mortimers, who renovated some rooms with new woodwork in the fashionable Neoclassical style (Poston, Buildings of Charleston). This is a new easement property so files will become more complete in time. Current files contain documentation of the easement on the property; correspondence related to the easement donation; acknowledgment of the easement donation; documentation of the sale of the property; easement appraisal report and IRS form 8283; request for alterations; correspondence related to the management of the property; Part I Certification Application and associated research including maps and wills (Sarah Fick, 2005); FOHG house history (undated); newspaper articles (including DYKYC 1934, 1958, 1971); report entitled "Architectural Investigation of 79 Anson Street" by Willie Graham, Carl Lounsbury, and Orlando Ridout V; conceptual plans; data sheet (79½ Anson) for CharlestonWISE Impact Project (Sustainability Institute) that includes construction date, square footage, number of stories, building orientation, system materials/types, Sanborn Map research notes, and additions/alterations notes (Mariah Schwartz, 2011); Meyers Properties sales material (includes photos, house history, news articles, main house floor plans, and kitchen house floor plans and photos); HCF sales brochure. The files will eventually contain annual inspection reports; easement inspection photos; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale of the property; historical/research information; etc. No easement documentation photos (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager).
