General Notes

Note

Notes: 1979 HABS photographs hanging in West Parlor above the mantel. The original copy by Andrea del Darto is signed and dated 1517, and was executed for the high altar of the church of the nuns of St. Francis, in Via Pentolini (now Via de' Macci), in Florence. the name of the painting is derived from the harpies who adorn the pedestal on which the Madonna and Child are placed. del Sarto, though influenced by the greatest painters of his time, from Fra Bartolommeo to Raphael and Michelangelo, here gives us an original creation, in which his exquisite color sense and his characteristic subtle shadowing, especially in the flesh tones, are employed with the greatest skill. The whole compostition has a certain granduer: the madonna is rather severe and thoughtful, like those of Michelangelo, but the artist avoided the slavish imitation of the master -- which trapped many of his contemporaries. He remained faithful to the more typically Florentine tradition of Piero di Cosimo and Fra Bartolommeo. Status: OK Location Details1: 1
