Other Arm At Rest with Folded Fan At Wrist. Sitters Dark Hair Is Pulled Back and Ornamented with Plumes. Sitter Stands on a Figured Wool Carpet with a Shell Back Red Velvet Chair At Her Side. There Is a Table Painted Out of the Portrait. Green Drapery Hangs Behind the Chair and a Rural View Is Visible To the Background on the Left. in Somewhat Worn Gold Frame Ornamented with Scrolls and Floral Patterns.Collection

Surveyed By Katherine Rogers in 1998 - Was Conserved By Chas Museum. There Restorer Went a Bit Too Far and Left Painting with a Rather Flat Appearance. Inpainting Is Not Bad But Is Overglazed, Too Flat and There Is a Bad Spot At Her Waist. Structurally Sound and Lining Is Fine. Could Use a Grime Cleaning, Some Inpainting. There Is a Mold Spot By Chair. Estimate of Full Conservation $2,000.

Legal Status: Conditions attached to original gift to The Charleston Museum:
The paintings (Flagg portrait and L. Terry painting are intended for use in the Gov. Wm. Aiken House, 48 Elizabeth Street, but may be displayed in the main museum building at the discretion of the Museum.
The Museum accepts the responsibiltiy for the immediate restoration of the portait of Harriet Lowndes and the eventual restoration of the painting of Romeo and Juliet. The Charleston Museum also agrees that should a decision ever be made to dispose of these paintings, they shall be first offered to the donors or their heirs at a price not to exceed the cost the Museum has invested in their restoration and conservation.
