In Horrible Condition. Catherine Rogers Surveyed and Said That It Needs Major Cleaning, Re-Lining, and Infill of Areas of Loss. Estimates $3,000 To Conserve. ***critical Need For Conservation***

Overall Condition

Poor

Notes

The painting is in poor condition. The painting has not been lined and the loose canvas is in a very fragile state. The paint layer appears to be stable at this time. There are no obvious areas of cleavage or flake loss. The surface of the painting is covered with a thich coat of dust and grime, as well as some surface accretions. It appears that the painting had undergone varnish reduction early in the last century. The surface was then left unvarnsihed and exposed to much coal soot and grime. This grime layer may have become embedded into the paint layer, creatng a problematic cleaning treatment. Damage Information: There is a large compound tear throught the center of the canvas. Lacks varnish. Much accumulation of grime/grit on the paint surface.
