75 Ashley Avenue (Daniel Fairchild House)Entry/Object ID
ASHLEY.075.001Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1842. The present dwelling at 79 Ashley Avenue is the second house built by Daniel Fairchild to stand on this lot. A previous dwelling, a three-story weatherboarded single house, was constructed shortly after acquisition of the lot in 1830. This house was shifted in the 1840s. The original house now at 75 Ashley Avenue retains its exterior features including a unique door architrave, which consists of Ionic pilasters supporting a carved wooden frieze featuring Grecian style acanthus leaves. It has a near match in the flat-roofed single house at 73 Ashley Avenue. (The latter dwelling, however, has shorter piazzas, and its Greek Revival door screen lacks the decorative lintel of its neighbor.)
