79 Ashley Avenue (Daniel Fairchild House)Entry/Object ID
ASHLEY.079.001Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1842. The present dwelling at 79 Ashley Avenue is the second house built by Daniel Fairchild to stand on this lot. A previous dwelling, a three-story weatherboarded single house, was constructed shortly after acquisition of the lot in 1830, and shifted in the 1840s to make way for the present three story stuccoed brick residence. Like the previous house, this one was also built in the single-house style, with red sandstone window lintels and sills, and fine stucco detailing including banded trim surrounding the arched staircase windows, quoins and belt courses. Tradition holds that the body of the house remained as exposed brick until the turn of the century. The house appears to have been built and jointly used by the Fairchilds and the James Hamlin family until 1908. An earlier brick dependency remains. It formerly housed the kitchen and is visible along Wentworth Street.
