ASHLEY.091.001Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1898. Mrs. Frances Carrere Robertson bought the site in 1898 and the City Ward Books show a doubling of the value of the property shortly thereafter, indicating that a house was built. She and her husband James, the president of an insurance company, lived there until he died in 1934, and she sold the property only to return as a tenant in her final years. A finely crafted example of the Queen Anne style of Victorian architecture, this 2½ story dwelling features a cross gable with a flat 1-story bay surmounting an engaged portico attaches to the principal roof of this side-hall-plan house. A double-tiered piazza with square columns adjoins the south end of the dwelling and is accessed by shuttered French doors from the principal rooms.
