In 1924, a French builder built four brick "spec" houses on Ashley Avenue hoping to receive other commissions for building other houses once the public saw them. This did not occur, and the Frenchman returned to France. His design was later copied on the exterior by subsequent architects, but the interior detailing with the graceful archways and oversized Georgian staircase remain unique to 99 Ashley Avenue. Another feature popular at the time is the entrance alcove. This house is described as "American Four Square." All the rooms, 4 on each floor, are very symmetrical. Previous owners renovated the house in keeping with the original period of the twenties. The original wood floors were in excellent condition when the carpeting was removed. Painted black banding outlines each room. The radiator-heating units were retained. The arched moldings and other architectural details are original. Lighting fixtures were lost, but period deco fixtures have been installed. None of the original kitchen remained. (Source: 2002 FOHG house history)
