ASHLEY.110.001Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1881. Francis J. Pelzer, a rising capitalist in postbellum Charleston, built a house on this site sometime before transferring it to William Thayer by 1880. Thayer subsequently built this house. After Thayer's death, the property transferred to Arthur Lynah, who owned it until after World War I. An original late-19th century wooden fence, consisting of simple pickets between columnar posts, surrounds the property. This type of fence, formerly the most common in Charleston's uptown neighborhoods, has generally disappeared.
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including Deed of Conservation Easement (residential); acknowledgment letter; Confirmation of Understanding; conceptual approval letter (kitchen addition); Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal report and IRS form 8283; chain-of-title research notes (HCF staff); historical research notes (Sarah Fick, 2014); site plat (2014).
See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement).
Files will eventually contain additional documentation such as annual inspection reports and photography; requests for alterations; correspondence related to the management of the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale of the property; historical research; etc.Collection
