Constructed ca. 1880. This handsome weatherboard house, 3 full stories with attic, was built by Governor Thomas Bennett on the only high point of land on Lynch Street (now Ashley Avenue). The Bennett family owned the property prior to the construction of the house. Later, it was the childhood home of Paul Hamilton Hayne, lawyer and writer for the News and Courier, who became known as the "poet of Charleston." (Source: FOHG house history)
