ATLANTIC.002.001Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1890. This 2-story Queen Anne style dwelling, which has a double-tiered front piazza that wraps around the building to the east and terminates with an octagonal tower topped by a conical roof, survives from a pair of identical dwellings built circa 1890 after the earthquake destroyed a large house on the site. Two unmarried sisters of the Waring family bought the house in 1923. Leila Waring painted miniatures of Charlestonians in the first quarter of the 20 century, carrying on an art form generally associated with the pre-photography era. She added a northeast room as her studio shortly after moving into the building. May Waring, her sister, was a well-known local writer.
