Constructed ca. 1820-30. This 2½ story single house that sits at some distance from the street on a large lot, which once stretched more than 200 feet in depth, was probably built by William Steele, owner of 89 Beaufain Street. Steele conveyed this lot in trust to his wife in 1819. When her trustee initially sold it in 1838, the present late-Federal style house was already constructed. Standing 2 full stories on a raised basement, the building has 2 bays of 9-over-9 windows on each level of the front elevation, and is surmounted by a closed gable roof with a flush boarded tympanum. The delicate columns of the double-tiered piazza are also a key to the date of construction. The merchant and silversmith William Mood purchased the property in 2 different conveyances in 1840 and 1851, selling the whole to Robert Alexander in 1856.
