Scope and Content

Constructed 1840-42. This imposing dwelling, originally of single-house style, was built in 1840-1842 by John Steinmeyer, a successful lumber merchant, on land that was originally part of Harleston Green. Governor Thomas Bennett acquired the property in 1842 for his granddaughters, Mary and Celia Campbell. The property had come full circle because the Bennett family sold it to Steinmeyer originally. The Campbell sisters were responsible for enlarging the dwelling, transforming it from a single house to a double house by adding an extension on the east side. The sisters also had the cypress exterior cut to resemble stone, a process called rustication. In 1904 Mary Campbell willed the house to the Presbyterian Church, creating a home for "Presbyterian and Huguenot women of gentle birth and small means." The house was returned to a single-family residence by a descendant of Gov. Bennett in 1971. Three files contain documentation of the easement (exterior) on the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the easement; Part I certification for National Register; documents relating to the sale of the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence relating to the management of the property; historical/research information including narrative history, copies of photos, and newspaper articles (including DYKYC). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager).
