From 1838 to 1960, the Charleston Hotel was situated at 200 Meeting Street, one block from King Street, where "all interests centre at this point, thence radiating to the business, shopping and amusement districts..." A magnificent four-story Greek Revival structure of brick and stone, with giant Corinthian order columns probably designed by Prussian-born architect Charles E. Reichardt. The demolition of the hotel in 1960 for a motor inn (now removed) remains a dark memory for many preservationists.
