Constructed ca. 1801-15. Hugh Smith, architect. Built as a residence with a commercial ground floor by the amateur architect and merchant Hugh Smith or his mother, Agnes, the structure was altered in the 1850s with the addition of cast terra cotta ornaments, including 2nd story window heads with broken pediments and shell motifs and plain 3rd-story pedimented window heads, along with a cornice in the Italianate style. Second-floor, cast-iron balconies were added at this date as well. Serving as a succession of stores and offices, 15 Broad became the site of the People's Bank in 1854.
Three files contain documentation of the easement (exterior provisions) on the property, including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; newspaper articles, including DYKYC; advertisement with photo from "Resources & Attractions of Charleston" (ca. 1898).
