Drawing Illustrates a Rectangular Monument with Pediment Depicting a Bas Relief of a Shipwreck, a Grieving/Allegorical Female Figure Leans Against It. Being the Design For the Monument To William Wragg in Westminster Abbey. Wragg Was a Member of the Sc Royal Council and Is the Only Colonial American Figure Memorialized in Westminster Abbey. the Design Combined Traditional Elements From Traditional Sculpture with Newer Taste and Specific Details of Wragg's Drowning. the Shape of the Monument Is Similar To James Gibbs's Book of Architecture. William Wragg (1714-77) Was One of Charleston's Most Well Known Revolutionary Loyalists. Son of Chalreston and London Merhcnat Samuel Wragg and His Huguenot Wife Marie Dubose. Attended Westminster School and the Middle Temple, London. Practiced Law in London Before Returning To Sc. Inherited Ashley Barony From His Father and Was One of the Colony's Wealthiest Men. Appointed To Royal Council in 1756 But Lost His Post in a Disagreement Over Taxes with Lord Lyttleton See (91.1.1). Wragg Refused the Oath of Abjuration During the Revolution and Was Banished From Sc in 1777. He and His Seven Year Old Son Sailed For Amsterdam, Leaving His Wife (and First Cousin) and Three Daughters in Charleston. His Ship Sank Near Holland on September 22, 1777 and Wragg Drowned Rescuing His Son, Who Was Saved. Wragg's Sister Commissioned His Monument. the Actual Monument Has Dolphin-Like Creatures Supporting the "Alter" Rather Than the Paw Feet in the Drawing.
