Edgar Wells, a tailor, constructed this building ca. 1786. Retains many elements of its pre-Civil War facade, especialoy the fenestration of its upper two stories. File contains building history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; advertisement, perhaps from a City Directory; newspaper article dated May 3, 1948, "Financial Institution Started During Phosphate Mining Era."
