George Macaulay and John Maynard Davis, merchants, built this building ca. 1790. Victorian changes to this building include a bracketed cornice and slate mansard roof with surmounting balustrade. Louis Green, 1970); building history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); building history from City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual (2011); 1886 earthquake damage assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage assessment; description of 20th century residents/occupants from Old Codgers Charleston Address Book.
