Constructed ca. 1891. This bank building of heavily rusticated sandstone and granite marks the stylistic evolution from the Romanesque Revival architecture, pioneered by H.H. Richardson, to the characteristics of the skyscraper style emerging in large cities. The marked verticality of the windows seems a precursor to the "banding" that was important to the latter style. Otto Witte, founder and president, orchestrated the construction of this modish structure. A native of Germany who immigrated to Charleston in 1840, Witte rose to wealth and position, serving as consul for various German, Swedish, and Austro-Hungarian governments, and by the mid-19th century he became a real estate baron, owning numerous rental properties throughout the city. He purchased 172 Rutledge Avenue (now Ashley Hall School) as his residence during this period. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
