Mellish, Thomas. "A View of Charles Town the Capital of South Carolina in North America." Engraved by C. Canot from an original Painting by T. Mellish, in the Collection of Mr. John Bowles. London, Printed for John Bowles, Robert Sayer, Thomas Jefferson and Carington Bowles {1768}. Black and white copper-engraving. Appeared in the Scenogaphia America. The view shows Charleston from the opposite bank of the Cooper River. Granville Bastion, a lower tip of the city, can be seen at far left; St. Phillip's Church at far right. Numerous other building can be identified, and the artist has emphasized the commerical prominence of the city through the inclusion of numerous large sailing ships in the harbor.Collection
