Portrait of Jonathan Lucas III, rice planter, born 1800, died 1848, Charleston, South Carolina. Artist Unknown (Attributed to John Wesly Jarvis (1800-1848), American, first half of 19th cent. Oil on canvas. Half length size, depicting young man seated mid-right area of canvas, with left arm resting on table, having brown wavy hair parted on the right side with whispy curls on high forehead, brown brows, light brown eyes, straight nose, strong chin, rosy cheeks and full lips: subject wearing plain dark coat having rolled collar and covered buttons; sheer jabot, white shirt with collar above stock; dark to light brown, yellow to peach color ground, upper left having landscape with full moon. Canvas is very dark with many repairs. Signature of painter not present, probably cut off.

Relined on new stretcher and over cleaned; overall alligatoring and much inpainting, repair to right lower cheek near mouth area, right-mid center near chest triple stepped tear, curved gash and irregular circular tear repaired, canvas has wrinkled right lower area near stretcher. (08/27/99) Alot of damage to canvas, alligatoring, old gouges, repair to canvas, canvas wa relined, buckling at left and right edges, subsequent flaking . Backed with corruplast 3/2/04.
