Constructed 1795; gutted in a fire and restored 1977. Originally constructed by Josiah Smith, a wealthy merchant, for two of his sons, this double tenement was constructed in the Neoclassical style then in vogue in Charleston. The arched entrance formerly opened as a passageway extending through the building to rear outbuildings, which have since been removed. Restored as a private dining club in the 1970s, damaged by a fire, and then restored as a restaurant, the building became the entry to an addition to the Federal Courthouse Annex. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files contain the deed of conservation easement and title to real estate; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; brief history of the properties; building history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; newspaper articles (DYKYC); photocopies of photographs.
Note: Images on this record are from the Cultural Resource Assessment.
