Scope and Content

Constructed 1783. Either Peter Bocquet Sr. or Peter Bocquet Jr. built the house at 93 Broad Street in 1783 in the restrained Neoclassical style with a ground-floor office space. In the 1850s the property was acquired by James Simons, an attorney, Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives, and commander of the militia forces in the initial attack on Fort Sumter in 1861. Simons added the large 3-story wing and hyphens, connecting the main house with the rear kitchen building. At the same time the main dwelling was converted to a side-passage, double-parlor residence trimmed in the Greek Revival style. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain original legal documentation of the easement on the property; Confirmation of Understanding letter; annual inspection report; correspondence related to the management of the property; narrative histories including one from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston and a report entitled "A Brief History of 93 Broad Street" by Meadors Construction; historical/chain-of-title research notes (handwritten by staff); copies of photographs; newspaper articles (including DYKYC); Request for Proposal re: sale of the property; graduate student report "Historic Preservation and Sustainability in Charleston: A Case Study of Meadors' 93 and 97 Broad Street Projects" (Jennifer Betwsorth, 2010) (see Multimedia link). Also available (pdf) are documents containing correspondence and other documentation from 1994-2006 relating to various issues involving 93-97 Broad Street, including legal correspondence. Files had been maintained by HCF Executive Directors Carter Hudgins and Kitty Robinson. The original files were not processed, except organized chronologically, and some items may be redundant. This is a new easement property so files will become more complete in time. The files may eventually contain additional items such as correspondence and other documentation related to the easement; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports and requests for alterations; easement inspection photos; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale of the property. Note: Images herein are from the Cultural Resource Assessment. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager).
