"The Penitent Magdalene," oil on canvas, after original by Carlo Dolci, Italian, 19th century. Original hangs in the Pitti Palace. This is a widely copied painting. Mary Magdalene has a nimbus and holds a small jar of ointment (same form as seen on sculpture of Mary Magdalene at the Tomb), elaborately dressed and bejewelled with hair loose. The painting appears in 1918 photo taken in the West Parlor of the Aiken-Rhett House.

Thick ground of paint. See condition report.

Notes

There is a small "test" area of cleaning on wrist-3/8"circular. Overall Condition is Good to Fair. Major cracks and accretions and abrasions at upper edges. Abrasions/loss at corner, loss at 1/8" x 1/8" along PR corner 2.75"-2" Masking tape visible on lower edge which needs to be removed. Need to stabilize crack at forehead (2" L) and at lower right corner. Bubble in canvas at lower edge from left corner. Frame: cracks at all mitres lower crack in shell extending across loss of gilding at lower inside frame and upper inside frame due to dusting/cleaning older repair at upper shell-nail pounded through

Originally owned by Governor and Mrs. William Aiken, Jr. Descended in the Aiken-Rhett family to Governor Burnet Maybank, then to his daughter Mrs. Elizabeth M. Guerard Wright. Mrs. Wright passed away on August 1, 2024. The painting is now the property of her grandson, Frost Parker.

Notes: Original hardware on back of elaborate frame. Previously conserved. Verso: Tacking around frame vaires from 1.25"-1.5"; approx. 66 tacks; masking tape covers some tacks, but continues around frame. Status: OK
