Support: The support had light surface dirt. THe paper was ozidezed, brittle, and extremely discolored from aging to a dark yellow color. THere was a crease across the upper right corner. There was a large and very disfiguring water stain along the bottom one to three inches of the paper. Medium: The medium seemed to be slightly worn away, or the image was only slightlyl drawn. Parts of it were rather faint. Frame: THe wooden frame is sound.

Notes

Scope of work: Treatment Cleaning / Washing/Buffering The surfaces were drycleaned with sponge eraser. The stain was disolved with ammonia on cotton swabs to loosen it. Then the paper was float-washed in alkaline tap water to remove acids and stains, then submerged when the medium seemed stable. It was aqueously buffered with a solution of diluted saturated calcium hydoxide water. Upon drying, calsium carbonate is formed in the paper fibers to buffer against future acid formation.. THis increases the life of the paper. The tide line was almost entirely removed this way. Cosmetic / Repairs/ Backing The support was humidified and flattened. The paper was given a reinforcing backing of Japanese paper/ starch paste, and stretch-dried to flatten it. Lighter areas around the edges which had been protected from light damage were blended using pastel on the surface. Final Presentation: The paper was archivally hinged using Japanese paper/ starch paste onto a mat of buffered ragboard and reframed with spacers toned with watercolor in a sealed package consisting of the glass, matted picture, and 5 mil Mylar D on the back, taped around the edges with 3M 810 tape. Notes and labels from the old backing materials were placed in mylar envelopes on the back of the framed picture. Cost: 675 Expected completion date: 2004-09-13

Notes

Scope of work: CLEANING/WASHING/BUFFERING: THe surfaces should be drycleaned with a sponge eraser . The paper will be washed on the air suction table with alkaline tap water to remove acids and stains. THis will insure that the sensitive media are not disturbed. It will be aqueously buffered with a solution of diluted saturated calcium hydroxide water. Upon drying, calcium carbonate is formed in the paper fibers to buffer against future acid formation. This increases the life of the paper. The tide line will be reduced using ammonia, other solvents, and cotton swabs. COSMETIC/REPAIRS/BACKING: The support will be humidified and flattened. The paper will be given a reinforcing backing of Japanese paper/starch paste, and stretch-dried to flatten it. Stains will be blended using chalk or pastel pencil on the surface. FINAL PRESENTATION: The paper will be archivally hinged using Japanese paper/statch paste onto a mat of buffered ragboard and reframed with spacers ina sealed package consisting of the glass matted picture, and 5 mil Mylar D on the back, taped around the edges with 3M 810 tape.
