Scope and Content

Constructed 1886. Although the builder of this house was born in Connecticut in 1848, he spent much of his childhood in South Carolina and served in the Confederate army during the Civil War. Starting in business as the superintendent of a fertilizer company, he organized a firm that grew to be known as Charleston Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Considered one of the chief exponents of Charleston's "New South" business elite, he completed this ambitious Tudor Revival style dwelling of Stoney Landing brick immediately after the earthquake of 1886. Tall stained glass windows and a second-story bay window ornament the front cross gable end topped by a closed gable with half-timbered decoration. File contains newspaper article (1968? DYKYC); graduate student report (Mary Margaret Schley, 2011) on the history of the building, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation.
