Scope and Content

Constructed 1881-82; renovated and restored 1996. John C. Tiedeman built this side-hall, double-parlor-plan house with low pitched, hip roof on an important corner lot. The facade exhibits rich Italianate detail, including the bracketed hood over its entry, approached by marble steps with a cast-iron balustrade; a bay window with balustraded base and parapet; bracketed window heads; bracketed cornice within the wide entablature; and a 2-story piazza with square columns. Another family member, Otto Tiedeman Jr., erected a similar dwelling immediately to the north at 63 Legare Street at the same time. The latter building includes more conservative detailing, however, with its Tuscan columns and omission of the bay window. Both houses joined a smaller-scaled version of the same plan at 65 Legare Street, finished in 1879 by C.J. Harvey. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains memorandum about the decorative stenciling in the house; occupancy history (1900-1999) from Old Codgers' Charleston Address Book; captioned photograph (copy) from a book (Then and Now); graduate student report (Daniel Watts, 2011) on the history of the building/property, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation.
