BROAD.135-137.001Scope and Content
One of a row of elegant Victorian single houses constructed after the fire of 1861, which destroyed earlier buildings on the block. 135 John Peter Merkhardt, a local "capitalist" of German descent, built the pair of substantial frame houses at 135 and 137 Broad Street in the late 1870s. The house at 135 Broad Street was his residence; the house next door at 137 Broad Street was built as a rental unit. Both houses stand on land which had belonged to Miss M.A. Seabrook and was in the path of the great fire of 1861; the lots remained vacant into the late 1870s. The 2 houses have several characteristics in common. Both are 2½ stories of frame on a high, stuccoed brick basement, and three bays wide, with a tripartite window in the front gable. Both have simple boxed cornices above plain friezes. The west slope of the gable roofs of both houses contain dormers with pediments, while chimneys rise from the east slopes.
File contains FOHG house histories (undated and 1994); newspaper article (1980 DYKYC).Collection
