Constructed ca. 1880; rehabilitated mid-1980s. A large antebellum house on this double lot burned in the fire of 1861. In the mid-1870s William B. Smith subdivided the property into two lots, apparently building an elaborate side-hall double-parlor-plan dwelling on the eastern half, while a purchaser of 138 Broad Street constructed a 2½ story side-hall, double-parlor-plan house with a Second Empire mansard roof and double-tiered front piazzas. Other architectural features indluce double-hung windows with shutters and iron hardware, wood lap siding and balustraded porches.
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; Charleston Real Estate Sales sheets (various years).
