Scope and Content

Constructed 1874. This is the only surviving corner grocery store in the South of Broad neighborhood. This type of corner store remains a viable part of some neighborhoods to the north, but it is one of Charleston's most threatened vernacular resources. Burbage's was built in 1874 by the Lutjen family, who immigrated to Charleston from Hanover in Germany, to house their store and saloon. A former house on the site was destroyed in the fire of 1861, and much of this part of Broad Street was rebuilt in the 1870s and 1880s by persons of German extraction. Berend Lutjen built the single houses at 159-163 Broad in 1878-80. Burbage's grocery store moved to this address from another downtown location in 1961. Although the interior has been modernized, the piazza still leads to a stairway accessing family living quarters above. File contains brief narrative history; copy of McCrady plat/drawing (no. 3422) of the Charleston Theater previously built on this site; newspaper article (DYKYC, 1982)..
