Scope and Content

This house is one of a group of 3 Charleston single houses constructed by Berend Jutjen, a German grocer and saloon keeper, soon after purchasing the site in early 1878. The Lutjen family emigrated from Hanover, Germany, to Charleston and built 157 Broad Street (now Burbage's Grocery Store) to house their store and saloon in 1874. The previous building on the site had been destroyed in the Great Fire of 1861. This is a typical middle-class dwelling in the single-house style of post-Civil War Charleston. It is a part of several blocks of such structures in this area of the city, often called the Victorian district of Charleston. The house is a 2½-story wood house with 2 bays on the Broad Street elevation, and a 2-tiered side piazza with Doric columns on the west elevation. The house has a typical plan with a central hall and two principal rooms on each floor, with an additional room on each floor in the rear wing. The principal rooms have their original, late 19th century wooden mantels. The turned newel on the staircase is original. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property (exterior); Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal, with photographs (1984); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; brief archaeological report; narrative history of the house; handwritten (staff) historical/chain-of-title information; copies of photographs. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
