BULL.015.001Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1863-71. George A. Trenholm, wealthy Charleston blockade runner and secretary of the treasury of the Confederacy, probably built this 2½ story wood dwelling in the late 1860s. The house displays a mix of Italianate and Greek Revival style elements. A columned piazza with an arcade formed by jigsaw-cut trim stands on the front elevation of the 3-bay facade, which features a closed gable roof with Italianate brackets and a central Venetian (Palladian) window. Trenholm sold this house in the early 1870s to Jacob Small, who also purchased 11 Bull Street. Helena Kessler Eggers constructed the 2½ story dwelling at 11 Bull Street by 1876. The building has a deep entablature, with Italianate style brackets, that serves as the base for a Second Empire-style mansard roof. A double-tiered bay further ornaments the front facade. The west-facing piazzas were enclosed in the early 20th century, when the upper sashes of the windows and other alterations were made. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
