Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1815; rehabilitated and restored mid-20th century. This Federal style single house raised on a high foundation, with its one-story piazza accessed from a piazza screen and an ascending wooden staircase, retains some of the most unusual Neoclassical decoration in this area of Charleston. The main body of the house, with its black cypress weatherboarding that has a beveled edge, terminates in a frieze and cornice with an Adamesque swag decoration. This same pattern can be found on the interior as well. The relationship of the builder, Isaac Bennett, to the family that owned the nearby mill remains a mystery. The house passed to the Shand family by the 1820s for income purposes and then to the Dawsons. In the mid-19th century an additional bay was added to the rear of the building, copying the detailing of the original building. The piazza staircase and screen were altered a few decades later in the Italianate style. A 2-story ell addition was put on the house in the mid-20th century. File contains HCF staff research notes (scant); newspaper article (DYKYC). No image of on file of entire house.
