Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1854; altered ca. 1887; rehabilitated 1984. Frederick Richards, a prosperous merchant-tailor, owned and occupied the nucleus of this substantial masonry dwelling before the Civil War. The British born Francis Warrington Dawson purchased this dwelling in the 1870s at the same time he was forming the present day "Post and Courier." Dawson championed numerous liberal causes as a newspaper editor, including a ban on dueling and diversification of the South Carolina economy. Dawson was influenced by Sarah Morgan, a Louisiana journalist, to champion woman's rights. In the late-1880s, a Swiss governess in the Dawson household had an affair with a neighbor, Dr. Thomas McDow. In an altercation between Dawson and McDow, the editor was shot and killed. In one of Charleston's most sensational trials, McDow was acquitted and carried out of the courthouse on the shoulders of exuberant Charlestonians. Dawson probably added the Renaissance Revival-style detailing to the house, including the double Corinthian columned front portico and the detailing on the polygonal bays on the east and west ends. The house was converted to apartments in the mid-20th century, and the double-tiered piazza at the rear has been enclosed with glass. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property (exterior provisions) including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; newspaper articles (including DYKYC); tax record information (handwritten notes); copies of photographs; Charleston County Real Estate Sales records(1999, 2000). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
