Scope and Content

Constructed 1882-1883. The current structure was built by the Home Savings and Building Association. In 1887, the property was purchased by George Croft, a clerk for B. Feldmann and Company in Charleston, who took up residence in the building and continued to live there with several family members until his death in 1901. For the next 11 years while the property remained in the Estate of George Croft, Mrs. A.E. Croft and other members of the Croft family continued to live in the house until the sale of the house in 1914 to Elizabeth V. Steeger. At that time, the house was rented out until the purchase of the property by Frederick Champa in 1923. Champa, a stone cutter for Charleston Monumental Works, lived in the house with his wife for over 20 years until it was acquired by Arthur L. Rivers and James Mazyck, both physicians, in 1948 to serve as their offices. The property continued to be used as doctors' offices for most of the 20th century and is now a law office with one small apartment above. Architecturally, the structure is an intact example of a vernacular Charleston single-house of the late 19th century, a form that was once prevalent along Calhoun Street but has been gradually reduced to a small row of buildings on the south side of Calhoun between Smith Street and Rutledge Avenue. The building is further representative of the lifestyle of Charleston's working class during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence; Part I certification (National Register); IRS form 8283; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; narrative history; title research notes (staff); Sanborn maps. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager).
