Description

One of four French colour engravings, late 18th century, most likely published in Paris. Publisher below sight line of the frame. French colored engraving, most likely mezzotint type/or stipple. Colors: Brown, Black, orange, blue, green. EVOUEMENT SUBLIME DU CACIQUE HENRI No. 6 Spanish colonial man is seated next to a naked man, Henri, who is lying down draped in white sheets. The man (Spaniard) draped in blue is inviting a woman who, dressed in a feather skirt, orange sheet in hand, a gold ring around her neck, has been summoned to help cure the ailing Henri. Two female figures are behind the bed wearing orange garments.

"En abordant a l'lle Efpagnole Pizarre apprit que Las-Cafas languissait au bord du tombeau. Il l'alla voir. Gonzalve Davila etait au-pres de lui et le fervait avec ce zele tendre qu'un fils aurait eu pour fon pere. Un Sauvage se prefente: c'eft Henri, qui depuis plus de dix ans, retire dans les montagnes de l'Ile, y recueille tous les Infulaires qui e'chappent a leurs tyrans; et qui , al la tete de trois cents hommes pleins de courage, les contient dans les bornes d'une defente legitime. Il a vu massacrer, fes amis, fa famille entiere il a vu bruler vifs fon pere et fon ayeul; Et f'il lui tombe entre les mains un des bairreaux de fa patrie, il le defarme et le renvoye........ Notes

Small tears along bottom left edge and lower right.Discoloration on all sides of mat, mat burn. Frame: Cracks at all miters; loss of gilding on all edges. Sides of frame were repainted in brown, beige flat paint and is very cracked.

Notes

Given by Thomas R. Bennett, who acquired the four engravings from an antique dealer in Greenwich, Connecticut in 2004. Mr. Bennett originally purchased them for his house in France but later changed his mind.
