Jonathan Lucas, Jr., built this handsome house between 1803 when he purchased the site and 1809 when it is listed in a city directory. He bought from Daniel Cannon's estate in 1803 a tract of 83½ acres, which then contained one of Cannon's sawmills. Lucas built this house and a complex of rice mills on the tract. Lucas's heir, Edward S. Lucas, inherited the property and then sold it to David Jennings, a banker, in 1867. The City of Charleston purchased the property from Jennings in 1887 and in 1887-88 erected on the grounds at the corner of Calhoun and Lucas (now Barre) streets, the City Hospital. In 1893, the former Lucas residence was made a part of the hospital operations as the Riverside Infirmary for private patients. The City Hospital was replaced by the New Roper Hospital in 1904, and in 1921, the Thompson Memorial Hospital was built and the Riverside Infirmary became the R.A. Kinloch Home for Nurses. (In 1946, another New Roper Hospital was erected on the filled former salt mill pond to the west of the house, and the building at Calhoun and Barre was demolished.) The house is under the ownership of the South Carolina Medical Society. The house is an excellent example of Adamesque architecture. One of its most outstanding features is the elaborate main entrance, with its elliptical fanlight and profuse Adamesque decorations. The house has 3 full floors on a high basement. The top floor was rebuilt to its present appearance in 1959-60, following a fire. (City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual.)
File contains house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; newspaper article (DYKYC); handwritten (staff?) narrative report on condition (1990) and needed repairs and correspondence related to the restoration of the house in 1990; plats; photocopies of photographs.Collection
