CHAPEL.014.01Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1866-67; rehabilitated late-1980s. A masonry building on this site, the original Northeastern Railway Depot, burned in the evacuation fire in 1865. The railroad company had begun construction of a new depot on this lot by 1866 and completed it by 1867. The present building, the eastern core of the former depot complex, retains its closed gable roof, brick walls, and arched openings along East Bay Street. Through various renovations, however, the latticework in the gable, the doors, and other features were lost. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains newspaper articles (DYKYC); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; description of Northeastern Railroad Company from "Resources & Attractions of Charleston" (ca. 1898).
