Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1809; restoration 1975-78. Prior to building 34 Chapel Street, Dr. Toomer erected this simple, late-Federal Style house on a large lot which he acquired shortly after the subdivision of the neighborhood by the Wragg family. The frame house, with a double-tiered front piazza approached by a stuccoed masonry stair, is surmounted by a hipped, slate roof with 3 front dormers. The restoration of this building in the 1970s served as a demonstration project for the rejuvenation of other uptown houses damaged by fire and subject to condemnation. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the covenant on the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; documents pertaining to HCF's rehabilitation of the house; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale and/or management of the property and/or of the covenant itself; historical/chain-of-title research information; FOHG House History and Garden History; other narrative history; newspaper and other articles (including 1977 DYKYC); photocopies of plats, including plat (1933); copy of HCF easement information card (TMS number, year of construction, significant resident(s), deed research, deed restrictions, measurements, and tax information); HCF intern research including Birds-Eye View and Sanborn Maps; photocopy of 1978 approved "Plat Showing 2.158 Acres, Property of Historic Charleston Foundation." See Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography. PDF of Preservation Society Tour house history (2012) on Media tab.
