CHAPEL.036.01Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1809; restoration 1975-78. Prior to building 34 Chapel Street, Dr. Toomer erected this simple, late-Federal Style house on a large lot which he acquired shortly after the subdivision of the neighborhood by the Wragg family. The frame house, with a double-tiered front piazza approached by a stuccoed masonry stair, is surmounted by a hipped, slate roof with 3 front dormers. The restoration of this building in the 1970s served as a demonstration project for the rejuvenation of other uptown houses damaged by fire and subject to condemnation. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
