Constructed 1840-50. Wealthy wharf owner Jonah M. Venning built these houses on lots subdivided from his principal residence at 40 Charlotte Street. Although some nine-over-nine window sashes, Tuscan columns on the second-floor piazza, and gable dormers survive on 45 Chapel Street from the original construction, Victorian Style window hoods and mid-20th century brick infill on the piazza mar the integrity of this original dwelling which stands several feet taller than its contemporary neighbors. Venning built a more truncated version of the Charleston single house at 47 Chapel Street, later altered with two-over-two windows on the front facade and turned, Queen Anne Style columns on the piazza. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
No additional house history on file. Needs further research.
