Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1872; rehabilitated 1978. Elizabeth Sell, a member of the William Henry Houston family, built this small, 2½ story, wood, Charleston single house in a block of similar style dwellings, including 3 Charlotte Street, a wood single house owned by Mrs. J. P. Morrison, and another at 7 Charlotte Street, owned by Charles Siegnious and maintained as rental property. Within a few years after its construction, a Queen Anne style projecting bay window and bracketed cornice were added. The house was rehabilitated in 1978. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the covenant on the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence and other documentation related to the management of the property; plat (1979); drawing of door hood details (1978); copy of HCF covenant information card; data sheet for CharlestonWISE Impact Project (Sustainability Institute) that includes construction date, square footage, number of stories, building orientation, system materials/types, Sanborn Map research notes, and additions/alterations notes (Mariah Schwartz, 2011); documentation of HCF's purchase, rehabilitation, and sale of the property. See Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
