CHARLOTTE.020.01Scope and Content
Constructed 1848. Constructed in 1848 by Robert Martin, this house was intended as a wedding gift to Martin's daughter, Ellen, who married her cousin Joseph Aiken, son of Gov. William Aiken. Like Martin's house next door at 16 Charlotte Street, this house presents an unusual combination of stylistic elements. The facade is dominated by columns with large Tower of the Winds capitals. On the west side there is a recessed loggia with an arcade which contains Italianate elements. The floor plan features a central hall, and the interior is ornamented with both Egyptian Revival and Greek Revival details. The formal garden with patterned beds survives from the antebellum period along with the rear brick dependencies.
File contains FOHG house history (2013); other narrative histories; a history of Joseph Aiken; newspaper and other articles (including 1984 DYKYC); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; sales (realty co.) brochure with photo (undated); sketch of garden and measured drawings (floor plans); copy of drawing of ceiling medallion (see ELIZABETH.048.3.10); three post-Hurricane Hugo structural reports by Rosen & Associates (presumably), Alan O. Campbell (General Inspection Service), and Harold J. Leamond (1990); draft of house description (undated, unattributed).
