CHARLOTTE.029.01Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1815-28. Among the oldest surviving houses in Mazyckborough, 29 Charlotte Street adheres more closely than any other house in the neighborhood to the Federal style. Richard Cunningham, a planter, purchased the lot in 1815 and apparently began construction soon thereafter. He sold the lot with a "large unfinished three story brick house thereon" to John Gordon in 1828. The deep brown brick, produced in the Charleston area, is laid in Flemish bond with sharp joints in a beaded lime mortar. In the best Neoclassical manner, the windows are set in the narrowest jambs and the most significant exterior decoration can be found in the rubbed brick, jack arches heading the windows, the dogtoothed brick cornice, and the simple, two-tiered, Tuscan-columned piazza. A two-story dependency remains at the rear of the property. (Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence related to the management of the property; Brockington and Associates archaeological reports (2004); copies of HABS photos; graduate student research project: chain-of-title, documentation of the enslaved, documentation of outbuilding(s) (Bellerson, 2020); FOHG house history; newspaper article (DYKYC); scant research notes (staff); Rosen and Associates inspection report (2002).
