Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1830. A family of French Huguenot descent, the Cordes owned extensive plantations in the Cooper River region and acquired several properties in the Mazyckborough in the early-nineteenth century. Mrs. Rebecca Cordes, a widow, built a substantial 2½-story single house with closed front gable on a high brick basement. A triple-tiered, Greek Revival style piazza graces the west elevation, while on the east a Venetian (Palladian) window illuminates the staircase. Small wooden quoins decorate the corners of the building. Mrs. Cordes's house passed to Thomas Cordes Harleston in trust for Elizabeth Cordes Waring prior to the Civil War. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property; Part I certification (National Register); IRS form 8283; HCF staff research notes (scant); annual inspection reports; brief narrative history; newspaper article (DYKYC); historical/chain-of-title research (author not indicated) and supporting documentation (Sanborn maps, census information, etc.. Requests for alterations, correspondence related to the management of the property, and easement inspection photographs may eventually be on file. No easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) on file. No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager).
