Scope and Content

Box 3 contains microfilm of many of The Charleston Museum's manuscript collection pertaining to the Aiken-Rhett family and house. In 2005, the Charleston Museum was awarded a grant to microfilm many documents that are in its manuscript collection and that pertain to the lives and business activities of the collective members of the Aiken and Rhett family members through the 19th and first half of the 20th century. Items that were filmed include documents, correspondence, wills, publications, receipts, bills, and account books. As part of the grant, a copy of each roll of film was made for HCF. This microfilm is now available for staff and researchers, although the film will need to be viewed at either the College of Charleston Library or Charleston County Library. Each roll of microfilm is distinguished by the following series: William and Harriet Lowndes Aiken Henrietta Aiken Rhett W. Aiken Rhett Edmund Rhett I'on Rhett and Francis Hinson Dill A. Burnet Rhett, Jr. Household purchases Miscellaneous. An index to the microfilm is available both in the document box with the microfilm and on the multimedia link in this record. Also filed with the microfilm is a report entitled "Interpreting the Recent Past: Scope and Content of Research Conducted on the Aiken-Rhett House in the 20th Century" (by Alyssa Constad, USC Public History graduate student, January 2014). Examines the 20th century primary source materials at The Charleston Museum Archives.
