Scope and Content

Constructed 1922-23, designed by David B. Hyer. Chisolm Street, named for the family that built the adjoining rice mill, borders a filled mill pond commonly referred to as the "Horse Lot." This former grazing space provides a popular venue for soccer matches and other local sports. On the west side of the street, 3 Chisolm Street opened in 1923 as the Murray Vocational School, one of the first schools of its kind in the state. David B. Hyer, whose career began in civil engineering and construction at the Charleston Navy Yard, designed the $180,000 vocational school that was named in honor of the philanthropist Andrew Buist Murray. Murray School features significant characteristics of the Neoclassical Revival style with its stone, engaged column portico and handsome fanlighted doorway in the Adamesque mode. The building was later used for offices of the Charleston County School District and then converted to condominiums. Three files contain original documentation of the easement (exterior) on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); correspondence and other documentation related to the sale of the property (including rigts of first refusal and titles) and transfer of the easement; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; narrative history; newspaper articles (including DYKYC and including article about the caretaker's house); historic plats and maps; staff plat research notes; reports of the Superintendent of Education (1922, 1923); HCF staff condition notes pre-easement. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager).
